BMW wants to boost electric car sales by 2016

BMW wants to increase electric car sales by at least 20-30% within the next two years, which is why the company has extended its partnership with Samsung SDI.

The Korean giant will supply batteries not only for the i3 and i8, but also for BMW's future hybrid models including the X5 Plug-in Hybrid.

Klaus Draeger, BMW's purchasing chief, acknowledged that one of the challenges for battery electric cars is the limited driving range that leads to "range anxiety."

"This is why the whole industry is still looking very much at fuel cells because it is not clear what is also happening on the side of the electric infrastructure," he said, adding that BMW is also doing a research on a fuel cell vehicle system.
